Drug shortage check
Type or paste your top products with an NDC and a quantity, from any pharmacy system or wholesaler export. We mark what's on FDA's shortage list, what's being discontinued, and what the same drug costs from other makers. Your list never leaves your browser.

What we need: an NDC and a quantity per product. The drug name is for you. Enter moves down a row; a pasted block fills the rows below. Nothing leaves this computer.

Status. Exact match on your 11-digit NDC against FDA's Drug Shortages list. If FDA lists another package size of the same product (same first nine digits), we show that status and say so. "Same drug short at other makers" means your NDC isn't listed, but other NDCs of the same clinical drug (same ingredient, strength and form in RxNorm) are.
Order. Products FDA lists come first, then products whose drug is short at other makers, then the rest. Within each group, the biggest NADAC spend first (your quantity times NADAC per unit), and products NADAC doesn't price after those, by quantity.
At NADAC. Your quantity times the current NADAC per unit for that NDC (CMS's survey of what pharmacies actually paid, updated weekly). It sizes the product, it isn't your invoice. Blank when NADAC has no price for the NDC.
Alternatives. Other active NDCs of the same clinical drug in RxNorm (same ingredient, strength and dose form) that FDA doesn't list, cheapest NADAC first; then other strengths of the same form, with how many of their NDCs are short. Same clinical drug is close to AB-rated, not identical: check the Orange Book and the patient's plan before switching.
Where the data comes from
- FDA Drug Shortages via openFDA, updated daily.
- NADAC (CMS), weekly.
- RxNorm (National Library of Medicine) for which NDCs are the same drug.
FDA's list is what manufacturers report. Your wholesaler's outs and FDA's list overlap but aren't the same thing. We'd add your wholesaler's invoice next, so the alternative shows your price, not the national average.
